March – Nightclub & Bar + House Music

** Follow us on @DJstuff

**3/9 Las Vegas WOW !! Yesterday was DOPE !! Woke up B4 the alarm, head buzzing from the night before. Had a (way too early) breakfast/meeting with the NC&B Advisory Board. Met old friends, got an update on how the show is going… numbers up across the borad, all areas… edicational workshops, exhibtor footage & entertainment. (show attendees can opt for an “All Excess Pass” with front of the line, no waiting VIP privelidges)

Group discussion on a few pressing matters. Heard some exciting input on how the magazine/website/show plans to evolve & grow. “Where many print publications ar hurting, Nightclub & Bar is thriving,” said NCB boss, John Taffer.

Later, I attended a an excellent workshop on social meeting marketing. Doesn’t matter if you’re a large chain or just a one-man show, there are many ways to use all the available social tools to get your self known & devolope a personal diaplogue with those who find & follow you.

NOTE: I’ve had a number of inquiries on this blog about just how a person might better use these resources. Once I get back home & get muy head clear, I’m gonna get into this w/you, I promise.

Next, spending an amazing hour or so with DJ/music programming genius, Wyatt Magnum, Magnum Music Group & his guest DJ panel. From Toronto, DJ Wrispect, from Houston, DJ Penetrate & Las Vegas’ legendary DJ Frankie. (Been spinning in Vegas since the Disco daze) All of these guys work w/muliple DJs & spend a lot of time researching & programming their music databases w/tunes for their respective formats.

Our group discussed things like developing a niche format sound/identity, (you automatically know if it’s a Deadmau5 or Benniy Benassi DJ set, don’t you?. the increasing impact of house & elctro/techno music in the club mix, how hip hop, R&B are becoming more uptempo & beat driven, (Flo Rida, Usher) how using a quick mash-up of 3-4 hip hop tunes can jump start a set of power dance music, playing to your crowd, not AT the crowd, i.e. force feeding too much of your own personal taste may not always be in the best interest of the crowd in general. One example I have used over the years is that 5% of the crowd will make over 50% of the requests if you let them.

What’s that classic line from Spock in those Star Trek movies? “Th e needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.” In this scenerio, the “many” are the crowd, “the few” are the requests (or those hot bodies you’re trying to hit) & “the one” is YOU.

One operator from Texas summed it up this way, “Playing & mixing music is an “Art,” programming the music to keep the crowd is a “Science.” Many times, it’s the DJ who has to delicately balance the two.

Now, the good stuff.. Just this past Saturday, after an invitation only VIP/Press Party, Paris unveiled Vegas’ newest mega-club, “Chateau,” described as “The next level in Vegas nighhtlife.” (great descriptive slogan, eh?) complete w/Vegas whose who.

On Friday, Nick Cannon, soon to be the father of twins, (he confirmed Mariah Cary’s having a boy & a girl) got the party started behind the turntables, mixing beats for the massive crowd to dance to, followed by dance sets from Australian-born DJ Havana Brown.

On Saturday, singer Drake took the stage for the actual grand opening of the nightclub, backed up by the beats of Lindsey Lohan close friend, DJ Samantha Ronson.

Last night, DJ Frankie invited me as his guest for a tour of the facility. We were joined by Chris Ping, DJ & Technical consultant from Lexington, KY. I got a chance to get up in the booth & see, first-hand the multiple set up w/ 3 side by side DJ mix set ups featuring 2 cd decks w/mixers on each side of a third mixing console flanked by 2 classic Technic turntables. Sweet!

Chateau has a really nice outdoor patio featuring beers from around the world and, oh yes, those lovely French maiden go-Go dancers are everywhere!

Then, off to Caesars Palace & Pure for the Nightclub & Bar Tuesday Party. Yesterday, I erroneously touted 5 DJs for the party. I was wrong, there were 7 !! Starring Nightclub & Bar US National DJ Of The Year Winner, Chris Garcia plus DJs DLUX, Grahamfunke, Homicide, Irie, Reach & HOT female DJ Sky Nellor.

When I got there, it was after midnight & I had to make my way thru a crowd of 3-4 hundred party goers, all who were hoping to get in & join the fun. Once inside, it was wall to wall NRG. The music was crazy good… lots of mash-ups, mostly up-tempo Hip Hop/R&B/Dance w/ some tasty Mainstream/Pop tidbits here & there… AND, just a taste of dance rock here & there to spice up the mix.

NOTE: Absolute living proof of what we all discussed earlier in the day at the DJ Mixing/Programming workshop.

OK, that’s about it for now… I’m getting hungry, so will grab a bite & then I’m off to the Apple Store in the Forum Shops at Caesars for a demo peek oat the new iPad2 which debuts on Friday.

Then tonight, I’m back at the Marquee for the Nightclub & Bar Top 100 Party & DJ Spin Off followed by the highly anticipated musical journey w/ Swedish Power House DJ, Avicii… & yes, we are gonna go all night. L8TR. Ray Ford aka DJstuff.

** 3/8 Las Vegas…. The world came to know Sin City as gangsters, Elvis, Sinatra &The Rat Pack, & in recent years for live shows like Barry Manilow, Cher, Elton John & Celine Dion. Ahh, my friend, but today’s Vegas has morphed into Mega Clubs with Superstar DJs grabbing all the headlines… AND the party people.

Here’s just one example… March at Marquee, this Wed.; Swedish phenom Avicii, for our Nightclub & Bar Top 100 Party; Friday; Robbie Rivera, Sat; Kaskade, Nightclub & Bar National DJ of the Year Winner, next Friday; Dirty Dutch Beatz w/ Chuckie, 25th; ecTwins, 26th; Above & Beyond, A;pril 1st’; Ferry Corston, April 2nd; ATB…. & the list goes on… multiply this list by a dozen other clubs & it really gets crazy.

Point is, we hear a lot about Miami w/ WMC & the Ultra Music Festival and… Ibiza during season, but folks, this party goes 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year !! Las Vegas has become the party capitol of the world !! Oh yes, did I mentioned that MTV has moved their Spring Break this week to the Cosmopolitan?

Here’s another Funky Fact: To Quote NC&B Boss, Jon Taffer, “Nowhere in the world but Vegas will you see a nightclub like Marquee (touted as the largest nightclub on the planet) w/a 100 million dollar price tag.” Marquee is five clubs in one including the rooftop “Day Club” with pool cabanas & round the clock party goers. I spent a couple hours there last night w/ DJ Vice & a thousand other folks… on a Monday night !!

Then I was off to Haze at the Aria for our NC&B Party w/ Three 6 Mafia & another 1,00 or so folks.

Tonight our Nightclub & Bar party is at Pure w/5 top DJs… yeah, I said 5. Is this a great city, or what?

Gotta go… there’s a session on Social Networking & the Wyatt Magnum’s Mixing Panal w/ six top DJs on the dias…. DJ Penetrate – Houston, Texas; DJ Yale Fox – New York City; DJ R.O.B. – Las Vegas; DJ Wrispect – Toronto Ontario; DJ Frankie – Las Vegas.

Talk to ya again later… Ray Ford aka DJ stuff.

Oh, yes… I told you we’ll be focusing in on House Music after Vegas & I just want to give you a mix to get you stasrted. I put this together 10 days ago & just haven’t had time to get it up on the blog, so here is… called, “Welcome To My House.” It’s me & what I’m about… Sooo, Get out the Bake Goods, strap on the phones & turn up the volumne !! And do Njoy the ride ’cause it’s allll goooood !!!! DJstuff

Welcome 2 My House from DJstuff at

Welcome 2 My House from DJstuff at

FLASH !! 3/2 2day, Steve Jobs debuts new iPad2… sez on sale next Friday, March 11th 4 same price.

** 3/3 Friends at Verizon gave me a 30 minute, hands on demo w/the Motorola Zoom today. All I can say is.. “I think I’m in love !!” Crazy fast & yes, it does have a few limitations compared to a PC, but for a person on the go, it’s a thing of beauty. iPad vs. Zoom.. Apple vs. Google.. Ahhh, the beatz & the tech just keeps comin’…

Hi… back in December we tuned your ear to the many forms of Techno. Now, in March… we’ll be zeroing in on House Music… presenting a series of House mixes from DJs around the world. Stay tuned…

PLUS, this month, in addition to DJs & Music, we’re gonna focus some of our attention on The huge Las Vegas Nightclub & Bar Trade Show, March 7-9… which is one of the Top 5 attended yearly Vegas trade shows.

I’ve been associated w/the Magazine & Trade Show for over 20 years, & am a charter member of the Nightclub & Bar Advisory Board that oversees & gives direction to the magazine & show. DJstuff (Ray Ford)

NOTE: >> I’ll be in Vegas next week, March 7-9, covering the Show. You can follow my escapades here on the blog & @DJstuff on

During my career, I’ve been fortunate to be a club DJ, a club owner/operator & an industry consultant. I write about that experience in a bi-monthly editor’s blog from the operators point of view, “Managing Your Environment” which appears on the Nightclub & Bar website @ My latest blog (3/4) has info on a couple of top DJ panal sessions w/Wyatt Magnum of Magnum Music Group discussing “Music Menus” (club formatting) Mixing & more. It’s gonna B all good!

** Working w/producer/DJ Dr. Mario in creating a nutty mix from a collection of his amazing Hard Techno trax. Just uploaded the new mix, “Electro Shock Therapy 3.0 The Dr. Is In”… my 1st new post of 20-11… & the 9th Techno Mix in our series.

I love to paint pictures with my mixes. In this mini-excursion, Ex LA DJ/Producer, the amazing Dr. Mario tiptoes the fine line between Genius & Insanity in this mix of his original Deep Techno music.

There’s drama, pathos, humor & joy. It’s a little bit science fiction soundtrack, part video game track, plus maybe some “Dark Side of The Moon” 2011.

I can tell you it was a mind blowing trip sorting out his material & reworking it into a voyage of self-realization for this mix. Buckle up & enjoy this trip inside your mind. DJstuff

Now, to keep the juices flowing, here’s the latest Tron movie trailer…

And, in case you missed it, here’s the excellent Daft Punk (produced soundtrack) interview from Dazed & Confused….

Daft Punk talk about Tron: Legacy Soundtrack

Daft Punk gave their first long-awaited interview about TRON: Legacy soundtrack to Dazed & Confused.

“As soon as we saw the filmmaker was not trying to copy the first [Tron movie],” the legend that is Thomas Bangalter told them. “But expand it after almost 30 years, we thought it was interesting. Then we questioned ourselves as to whether or not it was something we could actually do. The most pressure we feel is always from ourselves, even in a project like this. I think that is why we took so much time before we jumped on board, so we could guarantee our freedom and room for experimentation in this environment – it’s a dream factory. Hollywood is at the corner of imagination and industry.”

“This project is by far the most challenging and complex thing we have ever been involved with” he underlined. “Coming from our background of making electronic music in a small bedroom, and ending up having our music performed by a 90-piece orchestra, with some of the best musicians in the world…We are lucky to have had the opportunity to experience some powerful moments artistically over the years, but recording this orchestra was a very intense experience.”

“The soul and emotion of [classical music] is so powerful that to like it is so easy – it’s just people think you need to be educated. I thought that myself for a long time, until I had listened to so many kinds of music, that one day I just tried it. But it’s not about learning…It’s about learning that it’s just there.”

Thomas stresses the timelessness of orchestral instruments relative to electronic tools. “A cello was there 400 years ago and will still be here in 400 years. But synthesizers that were invented 20 years ago will probably be gone in the next 20. Synths are a very low level of artificial intelligence. Whereas you have a Stradivarius that will live for a thousand years. In the past, we have worked with clashing genres like disco and heavy metal, and here we would do it with film scores…this idea of the ultimate retro-futurism.”

So is it right to assume that they find dance music less appealing than they once did? “For us, yes,” says Thomas. “We are definitely excited by music, but just trying to constantly experiment. And sometimes that means going with other art forms, because you think there’s more latitude to experiment with an orchestra than an 808 drum machine and synth.”

Has Tron: Legacy usurped the original Tron movie in the duo’s imagination? Not according to Guy-Manuel. “Tron left a strong imprint as a kid. I was eight, he was seven. Maybe I only saw it two or three times in my entire life, but the feel of it is strong even now, that I think the imprint of the first one will not be erased by the new one. It has a real visionary quality to it.”

“The most pressure we feel is always from ourselves, even in a project like this. I think that is why we took so much time before we jumped on board, so we could guarantee our freedom and room for experimentation in this environment – it’s a dream factory. ** 12/1 Grammy Nominations Announced
Eminem picked up his second Grammy nomination Wednesday night — for album of the year. “Recovery” is the best-selling album of 2010 and marked a major comeback for the rapper.

Also nominated was Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” — the second best-selling album of the year. Lady Gaga was nominated for the second time in a row for “The Fame Monster”; it was the sequel to her first CD, “The Fame,” which was nominated earlier this year.

In the song of the year category, a song that was too profane for radio is now a contender for one of the Grammys’ highest honors.

Cee Lo’s “(Expletive) You” was an instant viral hit but had to be changed for radio to “Forget You” was nominated, along with Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie” (featuring Rihanna), Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now,” Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Built Me” and “Beg Steal Or Borrow” by Ray LaMontagne.

In best new artist nominations, the Recording Academy nominated the 16-year-old heartthrob, Justin Bieber, for best new artist in a field that includes rapper Drake, indie artists Mumford & Sons, Florence & The Machine, and jazz artist Esperanza Spaulding.

Drake was eligible thanks to a change in requirements that allow previous nominees to be nominated for best new artist as long as they didn’t win.

One name noticeably absent from the field was Ke$ha — even though she had a platinum debut and top hits.

The Grammys will be awarded Sunday, Feb. 13, at Staples Center in LA.

11/16 – After decades of prohibition w/no Beatles music to download, iTunes finally has the Beatles catalogue !! Who will be the 1st DJ to produce a hit Beatles medley mix? Lots of chatter today down that Yellow Brick Road… I say look for 10 million downloads by 1/1/11.

** 11/22 – More BEATLES !! Apple says people snapped up more than 450,000 copies of Beatles albums plus two million individual songs during the Fab Four’s first week on sale through iTunes.

Apple Inc. says the best-selling Beatles album in the U.S. is “Abbey Road,” and the best-selling individual track is “Here Comes the Sun.” The Beatles Box Set, which costs $149, is No. 10 on Apple’s weekly iTunes top-10 list.

The Beatles’ music went on sale on iTunes on Nov. 16. Until then, the biggest-selling, most influential group in rock history has been glaringly absent from iTunes and other legal online music services.

(Looks like my prediction of 10 million downloads by 1/1/11 wasn’t that far off, eh?)

** 11/22 – On my Facebook this morning… “Swedish House Mafia – Well we woke up today with sore heads after an incredible day yesterday. We were so nervous we didn’t tell anyone but looks like it went ok!!!!! Happy Birthday to Steve Angello today too!!”

Happy Birthday, Steve from us as well !! DJstuff – SHM with Usher last night on the TV show…

** 11/24 BEP signed as 20-11 Super Bowl headliners…. + will.i.iam sez the group will do some stadium concerts in 20-11.

** 11/23 ”The Beginning” – The new album with plenty of dance beats from The Black Eyed Peas, which they wrote & recorded while on tour promoting 2009′s double-platinum chart-topper “The E.N.D.” says the two albums are tied together thematically by their hits, “I Gotta Feeling” from “The E.N.D.” & “The Beginning’s” first single, “The Time (Dirty Bit),” which samples “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” from the hit 1987 film “Dirty Dancing.”

“If ‘I Gotta Feeling’ was about someone who went out and said, ‘I have a feeling tonight’s gonna be a good night,’ what would that person say when they came back from that party? They’re probably going to tell you, ‘Wow, I had the time of my life,’ and that’s what ‘The Time’ is,” explained.

“‘The Beginning’ is about taking ownership … of your life and not waiting for someone to give you the answers but to go out and search for those answers yourself,” he said. “We’re saying, ‘Don’t let the negativity rule you.’ Sometimes going out and celebrating is a departure. It’s a manifestation of your desire to live a happy life. Some people will say, ‘What the f— am I celebrating? I ain’t got no job. I just got laid off. I got to pay for my mortgage. So what the hell is there to celebrate, Mr.’

”Well, you’re celebrating the fact that you’re alive and that you have a mind and that you know right from wrong. But you have to change your frequency. You have to change your outlook. You’re never going to achieve anything positive if you’re trapped in the negative. So what you’re going out and celebrating is that one day that will change, and that’s the beginning.”

** Here’s my take on the concept album, “The Beginning” at a glance…. Keep in mind, although each song stands on its own, like E.N.D., together all tell the complete & refreshingly positive story. ***** Ray Ford (djStuff)

The honor pays tribute to a trailblazing female artist and her accomplishments. Fergie’s solo album was 2006′s mutli-platinum “The Dutchess.” She continues to sell out venues and score hits with the Black Eyed Peas.
